Hypnotherapy is a safe, powerful psycho-therapeutic tool which can be used to break the negative cycle of depression and anxiety. It can help you to overcome addictions like smoking, anger, blood pressure, weight control, exam nerves, lack of confidence and self esteem, insomnia, pain management (including migraines), relationship/marital difficulties, nail biting, nightmares, obsessions, panic attacks, fears and phobias, stress and many more.
Hypnosis is totally natural; it is concentration on a single focus or goal. We all drift in and out of trance throughout our daily lives, we daydream, we focus our attention on something and block out distractions. Examples of this can include listening to music, watching a film, driving a car or simply being deep in thought. In a relaxed state our minds can find solutions for us, they find the right answer, and because we are relaxed we don’t have to argue with the answer and find further problems.
Put simply hypnosis is a state of focused attention, there are no rules, it is yourself, looking at you, and so your experience will be totally unique. Most people do love to say how enjoyable it is, having time to yourself, just thinking with no distractions; like a good spring clean for your mind.
When you are relaxed and in a perfect frame of mind you can see the answers more clearly, that is why I tell my clients that they too will be working hard. By creating a relaxed state you will once again be able to see the wood for the tress, change the way you think in order to feel better, more confident and more in control. In a trance state we can access the subconscious part of us, the part that drives our responses and causes us to do things such as scream at a spider. By speaking directly to this part we can look calmly at our responses and change the ones we don’t like, change how we react in any given situation in order to deal with it more appropriately, effectively and successfully.
Hypnosis is surrounded by misconceptions and is viewed with suspicion by some, but it is really very ordinary. You cannot get stuck in hypnosis, you cannot be made to do things you do not want to do and you will be totally aware of your surroundings at all times. You are not in anyone else’s power and nobody can take control of you. Hypnosis is truly natural and I like to think of it more as guided or assisted meditation. It is you, the client that does all the work.
You do not go to sleep, and you may not even have your eyes closed. You can leave the hypnotic state whenever you want to. Almost everybody can be hypnotised, the only exceptions to this are very young children, those with learning difficulties and individuals under the influence of alcohol or some hard drugs.
You and you alone are in control of your hypnotic experience.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy deals in solutions, not problems, it is focused and not forced. Solution focused therapy is exactly as the name suggests; it is therapy that really focuses in on the solutions to a problem. Rather than rehashing ‘root’ causes and picking apart the past it is instead very much focused on the here and now – and more importantly moving forward. SFBT is all about building solutions, starting with the small steps that will lead on to bigger changes. The language of solutions is positive, hopeful and future-focused. Why is it brief? Simply because most problems will be helped within a short time scale, the average number of sessions is between five and ten. This is very brief when one considers some therapists see their clients for months, even years. SFBT is all about finding a format for change and when this is combined with hypnotic techniques we are really preparing our brains for action.
